Indoor Air Quality in UAE Schools

Table of Contents

Every morning, schools across the UAE prepare for another busy day. Classrooms are cleaned, desks are wiped, floors are mopped, and the air conditioning is already working to keep the heat outside. By the time students arrive, everything looks spotless. But cleanliness isn’t just about what you can see.

The air matters too.

Facilities teams work hard to create safe, welcoming learning environments. Yet until recently, very little local research had explored what happens to the air inside UAE classrooms during a typical school day.

That’s beginning to change.

Local Research Is Changing the Conversation, Study Stat Card

Local Research Is Changing the Conversation

For years, discussions around indoor air quality relied on studies from overseas. While useful, they didn’t reflect the unique conditions inside UAE schools.

To bridge that gap, sustainability organisation Goumbook launched its Take a Breath initiative. Researchers monitored 40 primary classrooms across 10 schools in Dubai and Sharjah over 265 days, making it one of the most comprehensive studies of indoor air quality conducted in UAE schools. The findings were difficult to ignore.

Many classrooms recorded higher-than-recommended levels of carbon dioxide, fine particles and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), gases released from certain cleaning products, furniture and building materials.

That doesn’t mean schools were unsafe, or that facilities teams were doing something wrong. What it does show is that clean-looking classrooms don’t always mean clean air.

Indoor air quality is influenced by several everyday factors, including ventilation, occupancy, air-conditioning systems, maintenance routines and the products used during cleaning. The air inside a classroom can tell a different story from what we see on the surface.

Why UAE Classrooms Deserve Special Attention

Every school depends on air conditioning, especially in the UAE.

For much of the academic year, classroom windows remain closed while cooling systems work throughout the day to keep students comfortable. It’s a practical necessity—but it also means the same indoor air is often recirculated for hours at a time.

According to the Goumbook study, eight of the ten participating schools used ducted HVAC systems, while the remaining schools relied on split air-conditioning units. The report also notes that indoor pollutants, including VOCs released from certain cleaning products, can build up when ventilation and maintenance aren’t given enough attention.
Children make this even more important.

Their lungs are still developing, and they breathe more air relative to their body weight than adults. In fact, the report notes that children inhale around 50% more air for their size, making them more sensitive to indoor pollutants than adults.

This isn’t about creating unnecessary concern.

Parents expect schools to provide a clean and healthy place to learn. Increasingly, that expectation includes the quality of the air children breathe throughout the day—not just the cleanliness of desks and floors. The encouraging news is that improving indoor air quality doesn’t always require expensive renovations.

Sometimes, it begins with reviewing the everyday choices that shape the indoor environment, from ventilation and HVAC maintenance to the products used during routine cleaning.

What Should Schools Look for in a Modern Cleaning Solution?

What Should Schools Look for in a Modern Cleaning Solution
Creating healthier classrooms isn’t just about how often they are cleaned. It’s also about what is used during cleaning.

As schools review their cleaning strategies, many are looking beyond disinfection alone. They want products that help maintain hygiene while supporting a healthier indoor environment for students and staff.

This is where Aqua Protego® offers a practical alternative.

Unlike many conventional disinfectants, Aqua Protego® is alcohol-free and low odour, making it suitable for occupied learning environments where classrooms, libraries and shared spaces are in constant use. After use, it naturally breaks down into water and salt, helping minimise unnecessary chemical residue.

To provide additional confidence, Aqua Protego® is Dubai Municipality registered, EnviroLink® BioGuard certified, and independently tested to recognised international standards, including BS EN 14476 for virucidal efficacy.

The result is a disinfectant that not only supports effective hygiene but also aligns with the growing focus on healthier indoor environments in UAE schools.
One Product Range. Every Part of the School.

One Product Range. Every Part of the School.

No two areas of a school have the same cleaning requirements.

Classrooms, libraries and staff rooms need routine cleaning throughout the day, while washrooms, clinics and other high-risk areas require a higher level of disinfection. Rather than switching between multiple unrelated products, Aqua Protego® provides two formulations designed to work together across the entire campus.

The 200 PPM All Purpose Cleaner is ideal for everyday cleaning and disinfection of classrooms, desks, shared surfaces, libraries and other frequently used areas. It delivers effective hygiene while maintaining the same alcohol-free, low-odour formulation.

For spaces that demand a higher level of protection, the 300 PPM Intense Disinfectant is designed for washrooms, school clinics and other higher-risk environments. It provides stronger disinfection while maintaining the same gentle formulation and ease of use.

Using one documented product range across the school simplifies procurement, staff training and cleaning procedures. Instead of managing different products for different spaces, facilities teams can implement one consistent cleaning strategy throughout the campus.

Be Ready Before You're Asked

Be Ready Before You're Asked
A few years ago, most conversations around school hygiene focused on visible cleanliness.

Today, the conversation is changing.

Parents are asking more questions about student wellbeing. Sustainability is becoming a greater priority for schools. Auditors and regulators increasingly expect evidence that facilities management decisions support healthy learning environments.

The Goumbook study has helped bring indoor air quality into that conversation.

It doesn’t suggest schools are doing anything wrong. Instead, it encourages facilities teams to look beyond what’s visible and consider the quality of the air students breathe every day.

That makes now the right time to review your cleaning strategy. Ask yourself:
Having clear, evidence-based answers doesn’t just demonstrate compliance—it builds trust.

Wrapping up

Clean classrooms have always been a priority. Now, clean air is becoming part of that same conversation.

The Goumbook research shows that improving indoor air quality isn’t about one single change. It’s about making informed decisions across ventilation, HVAC maintenance and everyday cleaning practices.

By choosing cleaning solutions that are effective, alcohol-free, independently certified and designed for occupied environments, schools can support healthier spaces without compromising on hygiene. Because at the end of the day, students deserve classrooms that don’t just look clean—they should feel healthy too.

Frequently Asked Questions

Indoor air quality plays a key role in creating a healthy learning environment. Because UAE classrooms rely on air conditioning for much of the year, factors such as ventilation, HVAC maintenance and cleaning practices can all influence the quality of the air students and staff breathe.
VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) can be released from certain cleaning products, furniture, paints and building materials. In enclosed, air-conditioned classrooms, these compounds may remain indoors for longer if ventilation is limited, making product selection an important part of an overall indoor air quality strategy.
Schools should choose disinfectants that are effective, alcohol-free, low odour, independently tested and approved for local use. Products supported by recognised certifications and regulatory approvals help facilities managers maintain hygiene standards with greater confidence.
Alcohol-free disinfectants can help reduce strong odours and fumes, making them well suited to classrooms and other occupied learning spaces. They provide an effective way to maintain hygiene while supporting a more comfortable indoor environment for students and staff.
Yes. Many modern disinfectant systems offer different formulations for different environments—for example, one for routine classroom cleaning and another for higher-risk areas such as washrooms and school clinics. This helps schools maintain consistent hygiene standards while simplifying staff training and day-to-day operations.
