To bridge that gap, sustainability organisation Goumbook launched its Take a Breath initiative. Researchers monitored 40 primary classrooms across 10 schools in Dubai and Sharjah over 265 days, making it one of the most comprehensive studies of indoor air quality conducted in UAE schools.
The findings were difficult to ignore.
Many classrooms recorded higher-than-recommended levels of carbon dioxide, fine particles and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), gases released from certain cleaning products, furniture and building materials.
That doesn’t mean schools were unsafe, or that facilities teams were doing something wrong.
What it does show is that clean-looking classrooms don’t always mean clean air.
Indoor air quality is influenced by several everyday factors, including ventilation, occupancy, air-conditioning systems, maintenance routines and the products used during cleaning.
The air inside a classroom can tell a different story from what we see on the surface.
Why UAE Classrooms Deserve Special Attention
Every school depends on air conditioning, especially in the UAE.
For much of the academic year, classroom windows remain closed while cooling systems work throughout the day to keep students comfortable. It’s a practical necessity—but it also means the same indoor air is often recirculated for hours at a time.
According to the Goumbook study, eight of the ten participating schools used ducted HVAC systems, while the remaining schools relied on split air-conditioning units. The report also notes that indoor pollutants, including VOCs released from certain cleaning products, can build up when ventilation and maintenance aren’t given enough attention.
Children make this even more important.
Their lungs are still developing, and they breathe more air relative to their body weight than adults. In fact, the report notes that children inhale around 50% more air for their size, making them more sensitive to indoor pollutants than adults.
This isn’t about creating unnecessary concern.
